[EN1] _ CH4O is a video from the series The Aesthetics of Concrete and the Chemistry of Death – dedicated to all those who were forced to endanger their lives working in the German explosives industry during World War II. This video portrait can be seen as an allegory for the nightmare of forced labour. (more under [EN2])

[DE2] _ CH4O ist die Summenformel von Methanol. Es ist auch heute noch eine der am meisten hergestellten Chemikalien. Während des Zweiten Weltkrieges wurde Methanol in der deutschen Explosivstoffindustrie u.a. zur Herstellung des hochexplosiven Sprengstoffes Hexogen benötigt.

Eine der größten Sprengstofffabriken ließ der deutsche Staat Ende der 1930er Jahre in den Wäldern nahe der ostbrandenburgischen Kleinstadt Christianstadt durch die »DAG« (1) errichten.
In den 820 Gebäuden erzeugte deren Tochter- unternehmen »Verwertchemie« (2) unter den Tarnnamen »Ulme« und »Rüster« u.a. Hexogen (3), Nitrocellulose (4) und den Raketentreibstoff Myrol. Sprengstoffe wurden in Bomben und Granaten gefüllt.

Auf dem 20 qkm großen Areal waren zeitweise mehr als 6000 Menschen in der Produktion und beim Ausbau des Werkes tätig. Neben deutschen Zivilangestellten und Dienstverpflichteten waren es vor allem Kriegsgefangene aus Italien, Frankreich, Polen und der Sowjetunion, Zwangsarbeiter_innen aus ganz Europa sowie jüdische KZ-Häftlinge.
Elf Barackenlager wurden errichtet. Darunter ein Lager für 1000 jüdische Frauen als Außenlager des KZ Groß-Rosen. Die Frauen mußten ihre Sklavenarbeit ohne Schutzkleidung an den gefährlichsten Orten verrichten: beim Befüllen der Granaten und Bomben und in der Säureproduktion.

Nach dem Krieg demontierten sowjetische Truppen alle Anlagen. Aus Christianstadt wurde Krzystkowice als Ortsteil der polnischen Stadt Nowogród Bobrzański. Der größte Teil der einstigen 17 km Betonwege ist noch befahrbar. Sie führen an zahlreichen Ruinen der früheren Produktionsbereiche vorbei. Zu ihnen zählt auch der hier gezeigte Schutzbau für einen Methanol-Tank.

[EN2] _ CH4O is the chemical formula for methanol, still one of the most commonly produced chemicals today. During World War II, the German explosives industry required methanol for purposes such as the manufacture of the highly explosive RDX.

Towards the end of the 1930s, the German state commissioned »DAG« (1) to build one of its largest explosive factories in the woods near the small town of Christianstadt in eastern Brandenburg.
The DAG site had 820 buildings, where its subsidiary »Verwertchemie« (2) produced substances such as RDX (3), nitrocellulose (4) and the rocket fuel myrol under the code names »Ulme« and »Rüster«. Bombs and grenades were filled with explosives.

At one time or another, more than 6000 people were employed at the 20 km2 site in both production and the expansion of the factory. Alongside German civilians and conscripts, the workers were mostly prisoners of war from Italy, France, Poland and the Soviet Union, as well as forced labourers from all over Europe and Jewish concentration camp prisoners.
Eleven camps were constructed, including a camp for 1000 Jewish women, a satellite camp of the Gross-Rosen concentration camp. The women were forced to work in the most dangerous areas - filling grenades and bombs and producing acids - without protective clothing.

Soviet troops dismantled the entire plant after the war and Christianstadt became Krzystkowice, a district of the Polish town Nowogród Bobrzański. Most of the concrete roads, once totalling 17 km, are still accessible. The route passes numerous ruins of the former production areas, including the protective enclosure for a methanol tank shown in this video.
